Common Questions/Things You Should Know
What is a Youth Retreat? The High School Youth Retreat is a weekend event for high school teens (grades 9-12) from all over the diocese come together to have fun, deepen faith, hang out with friends...new and old, and explore who we are made to be. The three-day retreat begins on Friday, April 28th at 8:00p.m. and ends at 12:00p.m. on Sunday, April 30th. The weekend will include reflections from the Youth Office Staff & Missionary Team, Food, Mass & other prayer experiences, bonfire(s), and adventurous activities like the Swing-by-Choice, Canoeing, or Hiking.
What is the Missionary Team? The Missionary Team is made up of Young Adults giving a year of service to the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. They are fun to hang out with and have some really great experiences and thoughts they want to share with you this weekend!
When should we come? You should plan to arrive between 7:00-8:00pm on Friday, April 28th. We will begin shortly thereafter with an opening prayer.
How much does it cost and what is included in the cost? Well, it costs $95per person. This is a bargain when you break it down. The registration includes: the retreat, lodging, all of the meals, activities and much more.
Do adult chaperones need to pay? Yes. We suggest that your parish pick up the cost of your adults if possible.
How many adult chaperones do we need? You can have as many as you would like, but you need a minimum of 1 adult for every 6 youth participants.
Deadline for registration: Registration deadline is APRIL 17TH! We have to be able to order food and make sure everything is in order for your arrival, so please register by the deadline: Monday, April 17th.
Should participants bring more money? There is not much to buy once you get here, but if you like snacks along the way, that's up to you.
What kind of clothes should participants bring? Modest clothes, for sure. Basically, what they find comfortable. We are going to celebrate Mass, so some nicer clothes is always a good idea, but not required. Just have them be comfortable. They should consider bringing a coat or sweatshirt, as it may be cold in these West Virginia hills.
What should participants bring? You should bring your clothing of course (as described in the previous question). It would be awesome if you could bring a snack to share (the snack table is always a very important part of any retreat). In addition, you should bring toiletries, bedding (sleeping bag or twin sheets/blankets), pillow(s), towel, tennis/hiking shoes (we will be doing some adventurous activities...close-toed/close-heeled shoes will be a must!), bible and journal/pen (if you have one you like)...that should be all the necessities. Please do NOT bring weapons, fireworks, drugs, alcohol, & unnecessary expensive items.
Can we do fundraisers? That is up to your parish and pastor. We realize that $95 can be out of reach for some students without assistance. We have provided some keys to keeping fundraising fun and a few suggestions of fundraisers. Be creative. You may also want to see if your parish can pick up some of the cost or if there are organizations like the Knights of Columbus or a parish women’s group that may be willing to help.
