We are blessed by all our diocesan campus ministers offering faithful, holy community to young adults at the colleges throughout our state! To share a little more about this part of our staff and the amazing work they do, here's an update from Nick Chancey about his specific schools:
Catholic Campus Ministry at both the University of Charleston and West Virginia State University has been incredibly blessed this spring semester. We kicked off the new year with a trip to Washington DC for the Archdiocesan World Youth Day event. We went to several really great talks and got to participate in prayer and worship. The highlight of the trip had to be when one of our students, Enzo Vavassori, got to say one of the prayers at Mass inside the National Basilica. It was a day none of us will forget anytime soon.
As the semester progressed there was a desire amongst the students to somehow add The Lord of the Rings to our evening programming. So we decided to watch the films every Saturday followed by some great group discussion. After we had watched them all we invited our local Tolkien enthusiast and youth minister Mark Haas to give us a talk on the theology inside of the Lord of the Rings. It was not only incredibly insightful but it also acted as a great reference for future discussions on church teaching and theology.
Finally the semester culminated in two of our students coming into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Enzo, who had been baptized, had grown away from the faith after his childhood. Through CCM at University of Charleston he became engaged with Catholicism again and has found a new life in Christ. He went through RCIA and was confirmed. Kazi, a senior at UC, had never seriously engaged in religion growing up. He had already taken an interest in Catholicism but was never sure how to pursue it. Earlier in the academic year he began attending our CCM events and finally asked if he could join RCIA. Getting to be his sponsor and joining him on that journey was an incredible blessing. He was both baptized and confirmed.
If you know young adults in WV looking to strengthen their journey for holiness while attending college, let us know and we'd be happy to help them get connected with one of our campus ministers!
